Radical Empathy: A Path to Justice and Equity in Product Design

Coral 2

In the summer of 2020 with the Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George Floyd, the authors became involved in (and one of the authors co-led) an initiative at work on examining bias in product design. The authors will talk about their journey of building justice and equity in product design and share the approaches and frameworks they developed to think differently about building and designing products for underrepresented users with their teams.

Tech companies are fundamentally driven to think about scale which creates processes that drive profit. This session invites participants to think about augmenting existing processes with methods and tools to become more inclusive and prioritize purpose while still enabling profit. The activities and best practices shared will help you widen your practice lenses (design, research and product) and hopefully help you influence and shape products with equity and justice in mind.
